I was born June 5th 1972. My main job is working as a teacher. (That’s not very rock’n’roll, I know. But until WinterStrain acquire world domination, I have to pay the bills!) Some of my other interests include spending time with my wife, watching films, reading books, listening to music, composing music (using guitar or keyboard) and playing guitar whenever I’m able to.
Music is a passion for me; I probably couldn’t exist without it. Apart from the WinterStrain material I like to compose a lot of instrumentals in various styles. They consist of everything from plain guitar instrumentals in the Vinnie Moore/Eric Johnson/Steve Vai vein, to more ambient, moody stuff. I have recorded two albums under the artist name Animus. They have been pressed in very small numbers on my brother’s indie label. If anyone would like a copy, drop me a line. And if you want to listen to sound clips of some of the songs, check out this link:
Here is a list of some of my favourite musical inspirations. It could probably go on forever, since I listen to a LOT of music. Well, here goes:
Beatles, David Bowie, XTC, Rush, Marillion, Shadow Gallery, Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Journey, Magnum, Asia (John Payne-era), Eric Johnson, Abba, Brian Wilson, The Byrds, Billy Joel, Prefab Sprout, Talk Talk, Rainbow, Queen, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Styx, Helloween, Dio, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden (80’s-era), Ayreon, Crowded House, Michael Penn, J.S. Bach, G.F. Händel, Frank Zappa, Brian Eno and Jan Garbarek.
I listen to a lot of guitarists. My main influence is Eric Johnson. It’s probably because he seems to have a perfect blend of emotion, tone, phrasing and also fast, virtuoso stuff. Some of my other fave’s include: Neal Schon, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Uli Jon Roth, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Pat Metheny, Shawn Lane, Michael Lee Firkins, Allan Holdsworth, Tony MacAlpine, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Morse, Jason Becker (he should be an inspiration to every living person, he manages to find hope and be optimistic in spite of his terrible illness, ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, John Petrucci, Brett Garsed, Vito Bratta, Wes Montgomery, Terje Rypdal, Ronnie Le Tekro and Brian May. (And of course Nigel “this one goes to 11” Tufnel!)
Some of my favourite films: The Lord of the rings trilogy, The Shining, This is Spinal Tap (the funniest film of all time, and obligatory viewing for any musician who start to take themselves too seriously. I have watched it MANY times!), Monty Python and The Holy Grail. I like several other horror movies, science fiction movies and David Lynch movies.
Some of my favourite books: Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit (Tolkien) and Fountainhead (Ayn Rand). I also like to read a lot of other stuff like music and guitar magazines, newspapers and documentary stuff. I’m interested in spirituality, religions and human psychology. Well, not so much more to add now. If you are more curios about me, or would just like to say hello, send me a mail.
